Student Life Activities

  Sports (7th and 8th grades)

         Boys:      Football; Cross Country; Track; Basketball; Wrestling; and Tennis.

         Girls:       Cross Country; Track; Basketball; Volleyball; Cheerleading and Tennis

2.      Music – Band, Orchestra and Choir

In the Sturgis Middle School Instrumental Music Program offers both band and orchestra.  Students are taught to play an instrument (rental instruments are available) as a way to discover music, develop new disciplines, learn responsibilities and work together as a team.  Each grade performs for the public at least twice a year.  Other performance opportunities, such as Solo and Ensemble and festival, are offered through the Michigan Band and Orchestra Directors Association. 

The Choir program is available to all students from 6th – 8th grade.  Students learn the fundamentals of music and singing through warm-ups, sight-reading, and various musical literature.  The 6th grade choir performs twice during the school year.  Other performance opportunities, such as choral festival, are offered through the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA). 
The middle school musical is open, by audition, to all students.  Rehearsals are after school for approximately 8  to  10  weeks with two week-end shows.        

3.      Math County/Tri-County Math and Math Counts (late winter/early spring)

        Students are selected by a written test.  The chosen students then represent SMS at a competition against other
      middle schools.  Math Counts is a 6th grade team and Math Meet is a 7-8 combined team; Tri-County
        Math is separate 7th and 8th grade teams.  

4.      Quiz Bowl. (end of January)

        Quiz Bowl is a St. Joseph county wide activity held at the ISD in March. Area schools bring a team of 8 students to academically compete.

5.      Science Olympiad

         Students with a particular interest in science compete against other Middle School teams at the SJCISD in science-related, creative thinking tasks. 

6.      Ski Club (January/February)

        Open to any interested student.  Ski Club meets Thursdays after school beginning right after winter break.  The group travels by bus to Swiss Valley to ski on their own.  All fees are paid by the student. Registration begins around the end of October and enrollment is limited.  Wendy Jenks, adviser.     

7.      7th/8th Grade Dances

        There are usually 3 or 4 during the school year which are sponsored by the Student Council (Mari

        Campbell, adviser.)  Generally they are held on Friday nights from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. and are open to Middle School students who meet academic and behavioral eligibility requirements.  (First dance of the year is open to all SMS 7th/8th grade students – no eligibility).

8.      Student Council (elections in fall; activities all year)

        Applications are necessary to run for student council, then representatives are elected by student body.  Student council sponsors the dances and other student activities during the year. Generally they meet once a week after school.  Mari Campbell, adviser.

11.     Clue-Me-In     

        Students read 20 books and identify titles, answer key questions, and score as many points possible in a competition against other schools in the county.  The competition is held at the SJCISD in the spring.
